Reporting to the Director of Parks, Recreation and Culture, the Landscape Architect assumes accountability and responsibility for the review and comments associated with development application submissions, the development of long-range park planning and masterplan documents, and the development of park design standards, and ensure compliance with all applicable codes and legislation relative to parkland development. The Landscape Architect also manages and/or provides oversight in the development of small to large scale capital projects related to parkland construction and trail development.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for development of Town’s Master Plan for Parks and growth planning for the foreseeable future.
  • Manage Park and Trail planning projects including studies, research projects, policy and guideline development and updates in accordance with applicable legislation and policies. 
  • Leads and manages all aspects of parkland and trail construction projects through the project lifecycle, which involves overseeing and administering the project planning, design, tender, construction, and warranty period to final release.
  • Ensures the Business Unit performs within the budget targets.  Ensures the effective care of all material, financial and human resources of the Business Unit.  Makes financial and procurement decisions in accordance with the Corporate Purchasing Policy.
  • Oversees, coordinates, and reviews the work of contractors retained to undertake construction services such as park construction including servicing, renewals and removals, and trail development.  
  • Attends evening meetings, such as public meetings, resident meetings, Committee of the Whole, and Council, as required.
  • Performs on-site inspections related to various capital projects.
  • Receives and addresses complaints and maintains a complaint tracking and follow-up system.  

Qualifications:

  • Requires a Professional Degree in Landscape Architecture from an Accredited Program (BLA or MLA).
  • Requires a minimum of 5 years work experience in landscape architecture, development urban design, land use planning and parkland development in a municipal setting.
  • Full membership in the OALA and/or Certified Project Management Professional (PMP) Designation would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of landscape architecture, project management, park and trail programming and design, urban design, municipal zoning and development by-laws, land-use planning process, master planning, budgeting, and contract management.
  • Knowledge of Ontario Planning Act regulation and procedures and urban and regional planning principles. 
  • A valid driver’s license in good standing and a reliable mode of transportation for use on corporate business.
  • Strong customer service, interpersonal, consultative, conflict resolution, negotiation, problem-solving and analytical skills.

Hours: Permanent Full-Time, 35 hours/week
