LGBT YouthLine is seeking an Interim Executive Director for a 12 month contract, with the possibility of extension. The Interim Executive Director will work with an incredible team of 2SLGBTQ+ staff and volunteers who are reimagining what community leadership and peer-to-peer support can look like. LGBT YouthLine grew out of discussions among youth who believed that a peer-based phone support line would alleviate the loneliness felt by 2SLGBTQ+ youth, and for 29 years LGBT YouthLine has provided support to queer and trans youth across Ontario.  

LGBT YouthLine is a Queer, Trans, Two-Spirit youth-led organization that affirms and supports the experiences of youth (29 and under) across Ontario. We do this by:

Providing anonymous peer support and referrals;

Training youth to provide support to other youth; and

Providing resources so youth can make informed decisions.

We are seeking an Interim Executive Director to lead LGBT YouthLine into its 30th year by upholding its mission, vision, and values in all aspects of programming, strategy, finance, and operations.

The ideal candidate will have experience in an Executive Director or senior leadership role, with proven experience in change management and supporting an organization through transitional periods. The Interim Executive Director provides thoughtful leadership to the organization and brings to the role a deep understanding of issues and challenges faced by 2SLGBTQ+ youth. They will have experience supporting youth in non-urban spaces, and youth who are Black, Indigenous, racialized, trans, and/or gender diverse. The Interim Executive Director demonstrates a personal and professional commitment to anti-oppression, anti-racism, accessibility, and decolonizing work.  

Accountability:

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Interim Executive Director is responsible for the strategic operations and management of LGBT YouthLine. They are responsible for direct supervision of 3 managers, and indirect supervision of a team of 13, including monitoring the work plans and deliverables of all teams. The Interim Executive Director is also responsible for working alongside and engaging the Board of Directors. Over the course of the 12-month term, the Interim Executive Director’s key priorities will be to: (1) mentor, coach, and manage LGBT YouthLine’s staff team to ensure programming deliverables are met, (2) oversee and manage the organization’s finances, grant deliverables, and fundraising goals, and (3) in collaboration with the Board of Directors, oversee the delivery of an organizational review, to be conducted by a third-party consultant.

Location:

This position is fully remote. Access is reliable internet is required. YouthLine will provide a laptop. The position may require travel regionally and to different parts of Ontario to support Programming; a driver’s license and access to a car is considered an asset.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and support development of a team of new managers with a focus on leadership development;
  • Lead a positive and supportive work environment and foster a culture of cross-functional collaboration and continuous improvement;
  • Strategic planning, organizational development and governance, including collaborating effectively with the Board to ensure clarity in strategic direction;
  • Ensure that programs and operations are strategically aligned to represent and effectively serve 2SLGBTQ+ youth, actively considering the context of the pandemic and its impacts on our staff, Board, volunteers, and service users;
  • Financial planning and budget management, including developing, planning, and tracking annual operating budgets reflecting the strategic direction of LGBT YouthLine;
  • Review and monitor administrative and financial contractual arrangements on an ongoing basis in order to meet funder and grant deliverables;
  • Responsible for fund development, communications, and partnerships, including acting as the lead spokesperson for any media requests;
  • Support the communications work of LGBT YouthLine to deliver impact content and storytelling, to meet donorship and stewardship goals;
  • Support the Operations team to monitor and improve our organizational technological infrastructure, in a manner that considers the needs of a remote and province-wide context;
  • Support the development, implementation, and review of policies, procedures and processes, making modifications as required to improve operational health.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in an executive or senior leadership role in the non-profit sector;
  • Knowledgeable and comfortable with the diverse issues facing lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, transgender, Two-Spirit, queer, asexual, and questioning youth across Ontario;
  • Understands and supports anti-oppression and anti-racism, through lived, theoretical, and practical methods;
  • Strong people and Human Resources skills including coaching, mentoring, conflict resolution, and consensus-building;
  • Budget and grant management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, and oversight;
  • Experience collaborating in developing funding proposals and managing accountability to donors, including demonstrated experience with impactful report writing. 

Work Environment

This is a 12-month contract position, with possibility of extension.

Total hours per week: Full-time hours averaging 37.5 hours/week. LGBT YouthLine is looking for the right candidate to lead our organization and is open to alternative work arrangements, if desired.

Anticipated Start date: Mid-July (flexible depending on availability)
